ULTRA DE LA RUE FEATURED IN THE NY TIMES

11/10/2012

Fresh off the press! One morning we found a guy knocking on our window. Turns out it was a reporter for the New York Times. Great to have the best newspaper in the world write the first article ever about Ultra de la Rue. Here is a small excerpt from the article in the New York Times.

When Afaina de Jong and Egberth Thomas set up an art gallery in a building that once held a window-front brothel, they were surprised by how many passers-by first gazed into their windows and then quickly averted their eyes. It took them some weeks to realize that the gawkers were expecting something entirely different from their exhibition of street photography when they looked through the old, once red-lighted, windows.

THE OCCUPY EVERYTHING EXHIBITION OPENS

28/10/2012

A year ago Wall Street got invaded by the Occupy movement. At the time it went down, we were in NY and witnessed history happen before our eyes. We had no choice but to document daily life in Zucotti Park. For the Occupy Everything exhibition we made a selection of the protest signs we documented. They show the issues and sentiments that were part of the movement at the time. Occupy Everything also has three rare samples of the Occupied Wall Street Journal that was published during the weeks in Zucotti Park.

It might be hard to imagine that Amsterdam once was a rebel city. On show are also a selection of rare original protest posters dating back to when many of Amsterdam’s squares were occupied in protest against the then new subway line and the lack of affordable housing.

AMSTERDAM STREET FOOD CREATIVE SESSION

15/09/2012

Don’t you just love the food trucks and random food stalls with their local delicacies when you visit a city? For the first creative session at Ultra de la Rue, we invited a group of local and international architects, designers and artists to explore the state of Amsterdam’s Street Food scene. What can one find in terms of food in the streets of Amsterdam, and how could a more diverse street food scene add to the liveliness of Amsterdam.

Chefs Daniela Castelbranco and Inez Almeida served up a new take on the local street cuisine. With the Amsterdam street map as a table cloth new concepts were envisioned during this tasty creative session. More of the outcome will be revealed at a later date.

If you want to participate in one of our future creative sessions, feel free to contact us.

The main narrative aims to create a consciousness about what movements can serve as a basis for sustainable urbanism rooted firmly in local communities.

A solo exhibition by Inna Vision

1 December - 22 February, 2013

Opening reception Saturday March 16th

from 16h - 20h

Resistance is Futile is a new series of works by Inna Vision. For his first solo show Inna Vision chose to use interpretations of what the end of times will entail as a creative direction.

Particularly inspired by masked mythical figures the imagery explores the notion of these characters as potential messengers of a new era. The exhibition portrays a change based on transition through the transmission of visuals and music.

In the artist's words: " When you feel the transmission you can not help but be liberated of the burdens of the past and come alive to the future."

Alongside the artworks the exhibition features a set of limited editions sweaters and t-shirts and a special mix-tape by Inna Vision, which is free upon purchase of any item in the show. At the opening Inna Vision will also spin a special selection of tunes.

Transition Through Transmission Vol. 21-12-12

With a specially selected mixtape for the Resistance is Futile exhibition at Ultra de la Rue, artist Inna vision wants the visitor to have a complete experience of his first solo exhibition through art and music. The mixtape offers the visitor a multilayered perspective on the exhibition by feeling the music and possibly doing some serious head nodding.

The Resistance is Futile is now available on our website and on Soundcloud.

Opening reception Saturday October 19th
from 16h - 20h

Ultra de la Rue is proud to present Fa•çade,
a solo exhibition by Afaina de Jong. The Fa•çade exhibition is a personal exploration of when the seemingly insignificant becomes significant again. In an age where meaning has become a myth, the façade as smooth surface of communication is a symbol to the visual saturation of the city and meaningless architecture. By presenting the pure presence of the façade Afaina de Jong aims to give an outside perspective on the visual complexity of the city.
